Facing Challenges of freelance writing

Bhumika Ghimire
http://www.americanchronicle.com

Freelance writing is a lonely profession. You sit in front of the computer for hours, trying to write something that will catch an editor's eye and hopeful get published. You wait for months for the check to arrive, all the while the bills are piling. You have to go through the journey alone, because unlike working in an office you don't have co-workers or a support system that comes with working in a group. You have to face your demons alone.

Freelance writing community is large and growing. Wouldn't it be nice if we can share tips and ideas and form a support system. I agree it will not be like working in a group in an office but at least we will have someone who understand our problems and who is willing to share their experience.

Let me begin that community by adding myself to the support system. If you are freelance writer reading this, please feel free to join the community. If you want to show your work, visit this freelancing blog to add them. Since sharing experience and tips is vital for strengthening this group of ours, allow me to share some of mine.

#Advertise yourself. For a newcomer getting your name out can make a lot of difference. But while you self advertise, don't forget that you need to update your skills and keep writing. There is nothing worse than being a writer whose name is bigger than his craft.

# Make contacts. Network with fellow writers and those who share your passions. Try to get in touch with agents and publishers and editors, but that will help you only if have substantial work to show off.

# And yes, hone your craft. Writing is a lonely job but the rewards are rich. Keep writing, even if you don't become the next Stephen King or Dan Brown you will be the best writer you can be and it is an achievement to be proud of.
